When Is The Right Time To Make Swing Changes

One of the biggest fears of people who are interested in taking lessons is the fear of “getting worse before getting better”.  I am sure at some point you have heard that quote or maybe have even used it yourself.  I think there are important things to think about when considering lessons, and how that quote should not even come close to being relevant if you are working with the right person at the right time.

The first thing to think about when taking lessons is when is the right time to take lessons, and what those lessons should look like at that time of the year.  When someone comes to me in-season my main objective is “how can I get that player to hit the ball as good as possible right away?”  In Chicago where I am based out of, we have 6 month of good golf weather that we can take advantage of.  Why would you jeopardize that time to make swing changes, when you need to be trying to score as low of a score as possible and having a good time while doing it.  The objective of a lesson during the year should be to just tighten things up so that you have more predictability and ultimately shoot lower scores.

The time of the year to be making big changes in order to truly help you game and take you to the next level should be in the off season.  This is the time of year when you don’t have to be concerned about playing a round of golf on Saturday, or worried about what your handicap is after the latest revision.  This is the time of the year when you can truly change patterns for the better and make a long and lasting difference in your ability to play golf.  More often than not I see my students put the clubs away when the off season comes.  Which I believe is a big mistake especially with how much I know that they want to improve.

I encourage everyone to take lessons because I know that it will help make you a better player.  Just understand what the lessons should be like given the time of the year and express your intentions with whoever you decide to help you with that journey.
